Resident Teaching Artist Opportunity for Preschool-12th Grade Education 

What Is a Teaching Artist?
A Teaching Artist conducts engaging workshops in visual and/or performing arts disciplines for preschool to grade 12 students.

Part-time, Independent Contractor

Start Date:
Placements are available throughout the year, including summer session

Compensation:
$32+ per workshop (fee negotiable based on experience)

Schedule:
Set your own schedule, provided you are able to fulfill contract requirements

Service Area:
Opportunities available throughout Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, and Ventura Counties

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum two years of youth experience — Experience working with elementary and middle school students; educators with experience ranging from preschool through grade 12 will also be considered.

  • Creative approach to arts instruction — Ability to teach visual and/or performing arts in an engaging, imaginative way.

  • Classroom management skills — Capable of effectively managing a classroom of up to 30 students.

  • Reliable transportation — Must be able to travel to assigned school sites.

  • Professional communication skills — Able to communicate clearly and professionally via email, text, and phone.

  • TB clearance and Live Scan — Must complete TB testing and Live Scan fingerprinting processed specifically through the Santa Barbara County Education Office.

  • General liability insurance + AB1913 training — Required for all teaching artists working in California public schools.

 Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with diverse communities — Experience working with socioeconomically disadvantaged communities, Title I schools, and/or special education students.

  • Bilingual or multilingual skills — Ability to communicate in more than one language for certain school placements.

  • Relevant education or degree in progress — Degree from an accredited institution or coursework currently in progress.

  • Knowledge of California Arts Standards — Familiarity with and experience teaching the current California Arts Standards.

  • Multicultural programming experience — Experience integrating multicultural content into arts instruction.

  • Commitment to DEI — Dedication to fostering a classroom environment that celebrates diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Description

Teaching Artists conduct weekly art education workshops in their preferred visual or performing arts discipline in preschool to grade 12 classrooms across Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, and Ventura Counties, including many Title I schools. Flexibility and creativity are essential, as Teaching Artists collaborate closely with classroom teachers and school staff to deliver arts instruction during designated instructional times.

Key features of this role include flexible scheduling during school hours; opportunities for after-school and summer programming at a higher pay rate; support from a dedicated school liaison or program associate to assist with contract management; and meaningful work that promotes equitable access to high-quality arts education for youth throughout Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, and Ventura Counties.
