The 40th Annual I Madonnari Street Painting Festival:
The 40th Annual I Madonnari Street Painting Festival celebrated four decades of art, community, and creativity while raising critical funds for the Children's Creative Project (CCP), a program of the Santa Barbara County Education Office. As CCP's signature fundraising event, the festival supports year-round arts education programs that serve public school students from preschool through high school across Santa Barbara County, providing meaningful access to the arts for thousands of young people.
This milestone year featured an extraordinary artistic centerpiece: a collaborative "Super Square" created by five longtime I Madonnari artists—Jennifer LeMay, Jay Schwartz, Sharyn Chan, Ann Hefferman, and Lisa Jones. Their large-scale work celebrated the festival's rich history and honored the artists whose dedication has helped shape I Madonnari over the past four decades.
The festival also welcomed internationally recognized chalk artist Marlon Yanes, known as the "Pavement Picasso," as the 2026 Featured Artist. Renowned for his striking, large-scale, photorealistic street paintings, Yanes captivated visitors with his vibrant work.
Free and open to the public, the three-day festival transformed the Old Mission Santa Barbara plaza into a vibrant outdoor gallery featuring hundreds of street paintings alongside a full schedule of live music and performances. Festivalgoers enjoyed entertainment from Zermeno Dance Academy, the Santa Barbara High School, San Marcos High School, and La Colina Junior High jazz bands, the Brasscals, Jackson Gillies, Spencer the Gardener, Mezcal Martini, and other local performers, creating a festive atmosphere that celebrated both visual and performing arts.
The 40th Annual I Madonnari Festival once again demonstrated the power of community support for arts education, bringing together artists, volunteers, sponsors, performers, and thousands of visitors to ensure that students throughout Santa Barbara County continue to experience the transformative impact of the arts.
